Artist's Description
Atala, a painting by artist, V. Z. Hughes Russell 1911-1999, was created in a painting class she joined as therapy after her breast cancer operation in 1965.
She was diagnosed by her surgeon as incurable but her husband would not except the diagnosis and prepared juice from all manner of fruits and vegetables. All cancer in her body even bone cancer went into remission and she lived another thirty five years, out living her husband nearly30 years. One day years later she looked at the painting and said, " her right breast is missing" she looked down and said, "I've painted a mirror image of my condition, my left breast is missing". When she would ask what I wanted from her estate, my answer was always, " Atala".

About Mary Russell
My first memories of learning started at age three and a half when I made my first doll dress. My Mother cut the pattern for me, showed me how to thread a needle and how to make a straight stitch first then a back stitch, after that I was on my way. I made a dress and wore it to school in the second grade. My Mother didn't allow me to use the sewing machine because she was afraid I would sew my finger. I took the opportunity to make the the dress while she was in the hospital having my brother, I was allowed to use the machine after that. Most of my skills are self taught, In 1960 with 4 children under four and a half Years old, I started sewing, designing, pattern drafting, clothing construction and altering in my home studio....
