Artist's Description
Moon Light Journey is a poem written by my Mother, Mary Downing Sysk. As a child she lost her mother at age six. She told us she couldn't remember a time when she couldn't read, that when she came to herself she was reading before age six.
When she talked of wanting to travel all over the world, her Papa and older brothers would tell her, "You are a girl and girls don't travel"
She traveled in this poem, you are invited to come along I hope you enjoy the trip.
About Mary Russell

My first memories of learning started at age three and a half when I made my first doll dress. My Mother cut the pattern for me, showed me how to thread a needle and how to make a straight stitch first then a back stitch, after that I was on my way. I made a dress and wore it to school in the second grade. My Mother didn't allow me to use the sewing machine because she was afraid I would sew my finger. I took the opportunity to make the the dress while she was in the hospital having my brother, I was allowed to use the machine after that. Most of my skills are self taught, In 1960 with 4 children under four and a half Years old, I started sewing, designing, pattern drafting, clothing construction and altering in my home studio....

The first time I heard this poem, Mother quoted it to me. She said it was her favorite and had memorized it. It was lovely to hear my Grandmother's poem from my Mother. A treasured memory for me.
